Following reports that most American and foreign car companies have had horrific sale numbers in the last month, American Airlines has announced that they are going to be cutting 7,000 jobs. This follows a stock market that is at it's lowest levels since 2002, which follows the weakening dollar. All these numbers and news are depressing in more ways than one. Along with the high gas prices and the mortgage mess that happened last year, it doesn't look like the economy will be able to recover anytime soon. I doubt that this has anything to do with politics, historically, after a period of tremendous growth, there has always been a period of decline. Perhaps this is the market leveling off after going through almost a decade of growth in the 1990's. One can hope that perhaps in the very near future, the economy will straighten itself out.

rajon rondo ad

Just a funny ad I saw last night. Thought it worked well with the Boston Celtics championship. Apparently this ad has been running throughout the Finals, but I've never seen it until last night. Makes good use of humor and celebrity endorsement to push a product line.

Last Two Posts
In all honesty, neither of the two ads below are fair. It doesn't accurately describe the agenda of either candidate. However, it uses emotion and humor and therefore gains more viewers and attention than just a spokesperson sitting there saying facts.
Obama- Not Wallet
This is a parody of the McCain ad. This makes fun of the dramatization, and suggests that Obama will unfairly raise taxes. Once again, not really factual but uses humor instead of emotion.

John McCain- Baby Alex
This is an ad from moveon.org that attacks John McCain's "100 years" statement about the war in Iraq. It's not really factual but it's effective on playing towards people's emotions.

Fool me once, shame on me!

Recently shopping I noticed how marketers try to trick the consumer by snazzing up there Ads. For example: many items advertise two for five dollars. The items is still an increased price of 2.50, the same as it was last week, but now a marked ad exaggerates this false deal. This is very tricky and easy to fall victim to. The only reason I noticed is because it a brand product I usually buy and keep track of the cost.

New Restaurent

A new restaurent opened up near my house a few months ago, and i got their menu in the mail. The last page of the pamphlet was dedicated to coupons. They were giving away free drinks, and free sandwiches whenever you spent a certain amount of money, or if you bought a certain amount of food, delivery would be free. i think it's a good idea to get people to at least go and see the place, and know where it is, and at least have a feel of what the food tastes like.

Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airline uses humor to help market their service. They have a few commercials like this one, where their motto is "Want to get away"? This technique is effective because it provides a laugh while also marketing the service.

You Cant Escape Marketing

Taking this class has helped give me a stronger situational awareness of marketing techniques and strategies. Marketing is pretty much embedded in our lives and nearly impossible to escape. Recently after leaving school I ended up behind a plumbing truck. I knew it was a plumbing truck because all its information was located on the back. It exposed a website, phone number and services. This is a pretty clever technique because while driving your stuck and have no choice but to view the rear of the truck. So it uses colors and fonts help better grab your attention.

Marketing 6/16/08
In light of recent economic hardship, it appears that most advertisements/companies are focused more on mentioning the low cost or how we could save money by using a certain product rather than talking about it's overall quality. Companies seem to be taking advantage of the economic stimulus checks people are receiving by having sales and offering discounts in that name. They realize that this may be the first time in a while that people have come across a few hundred dollars of disposable income and many hurting organizations are competing to be the place in which we spend that money
As always, heavy marketing is being utilized by the two current candidates for the presidency. Barack Obama is going under the phrase of "Change". Realizing that change is what people seem to want, McCain responds with a similiar "Change we can believe in". Perhaps the greatest marketing strategy for these candidates is the picking of their Vice President. The VP realistically does not have much more power than the President decides and candidates often make their choice based upon who would gain them the most votes and support (instead of who they think would be best). Such marketing strategies would include picking a governor or senator from a key state they need to win. Despite their primary differences and disagreements, names mentioned are Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton. Romney would provide a business-like image to convince voters that the McCain camp would have the answers to the struggling economy, while Hillary (or perhaps even another woman) would help ease the former Clinton supporters who are still upset about her loss.
